Partners of the ELIV congress

VDI-FVT

The VDI Society for Vehicle and Transport Technologies, VDI-FVT in short, has around 28,000 members that are affiliated to at least one of its 8 technical sections. This makes it the second biggest of the VDI’s dedicated societies. VDI-FVT is the community for engineers working in the vehicle industry, as well as for engineers dealing with transport and traffic outside manufacturing industries.

Traditionally, a majority of members work in automotive. VDI-FVT is the German affiliate of the world federation of automotive engineers’ societies, FISITA, and it is the intellectual sponsor of many big conferences on automotive technology and thus fosters exchange and knowledge transfer both nationally and internationally. It also sponsors Formula Student Germany, awarding VDI membership to all German participants, and promotes other student competitions for transport engineers. VDI-FVT has recently reconstituted technical sections for rail and marine technologies, as well as space- and aircraft. It is putting a strong focus on transport and traffic in general and aims to mediate between technology and society.

Review of ELIV 2021

“Software is everything.”

The message from experts at the international VDI ELIV (ELectronics In Vehicles) Congress in Bonn was clear. From the 20th  to 21st of October, 2021, professionals presented the latest developments in the automotive sector.

“Software is everything. The future is not the car, but rather the cloud,” says Karl-Thomas Neumann, Investor, former CEO of Opel and Continental, former Electronics Head at Volkswagen and the keynote speaker at ELIV 2021. The experts agreed on one point in particular: Change in and around the automobile is not just inevitable but also offers opportunities. Christoph Hartung, CEO of ETAS, a developer of embedded systems, said: “the automotive industry must learn how processes work in the software industry. This requires a completely different approach and way of thinking, especially in terms of how we communicate, cooperate and drive innovation together.”

Will the automotive industry achieve a turnaround in the software sector?

During the opening and closing speeches of this year’s ELIV, participants were asked this question. In the opening speech, 65% were optimistic that the industry would experience a turnaround. This topic was also a recurring theme throughout the entire program of the two-day event. The results underscore once again that significant challenges lie ahead for the automotive industry and there remains much work to be done in the software sector.

Climate change & Artificial intelligence / Software development influence our lives the most

In a separate lecture, participants were queried about which trends are most significantly altering our lives. Climate change emerged as the clear frontrunner, followed by software and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These are also the primary challenges currently facing the automotive industry.

Another megatrend to keep in mind is New Mobility.

"Shaping the world's mobility" - this is set to be the next challenge, as per Joachim Langenwalter’s (SVP Engineering, Stellantis) press statement. Langenwalter emphasizes the need for the creation of hyper-personalized, proactive mobility services. Vehicles must transform from merely being a mode of transport to a connected multimodal platform. Consequently, the vehicle will evolve into a connected third living space.

Neumann also agrees with this trend: “The car is no longer the focus, but rather the cloud platform.”
For him, the essence of future value creation predominantly lies in mobility services. However, this shift implies that “it is not logical for individual OEMs to develop car operating systems; instead, there is an urgent need to form an industry-wide alliance for this purpose.”
